Read: Frank Worsley and Antarctica:
What was Frank Worsley's role aboard the Endurance, and what duties do you think he may have had?
Discus with others - without the convenience of modern techonology, how did Worsley navigate the ships?

How long did Jean's flight from London to Australia take?
Using a map and scale, how many kilometers did she fly on her Australia - England flight, and her NZ - England flight?
Flying an aircraft in the 1930's for long distances would have been challenging, what do you think it took for Jean to do so?

LESSON 2: NZ and Antarctic Exploration.
The Kiwi men and women in Antarctica
Read: Antarctica and New Zealand - First amoung men
When was NZ's first contact with Antarctica?
Who were the two Kiwi's active during the heroic age of exploration?
Some of you may wish to visit Antarctica at some point in your lives. Can you imagine what sort of clothing and equipment was used by the Kiwis mentioned above? Discus in a group how things would be different today.
Josh and Zac will likely take around 80 days to complete their expedition. Many of the expeditions of the heroic age took much longer, in most cases years.
Brainstorm the hazards of living and working in an environment like Antarctica. How would these differ from what Josh and Zac should expect, to that of which the historic adventurers faced?
While Josh and Zac are on the ice, skiing towards the South Pole, they will no doubt face hard and difficult times. Using what you have read about Hillary, Worsley and Batten, what personal qualities do you think would be important for Josh and Zac to call upon during tough days?
These are all personal heroes of Josh and Zac. They demonstrate worthy qualities in the face of hardship, and have had success in their chosen pursuits. It is worth noting how all (not just the adventurers listed here) have felt failure before, but have never given up.
Who are your personal heroes? What have they achieved, and where have the failed but brushed themselves off and carried on?
